Abstract

1521553 Treating pyrolysis fuel oils LUMMUS CO 14 Oct 1975 [15 Oct 1974] 42099/75 Heading C5E Pyrolysis fuel oils are treated by adding sulphur or a sulphur-containing compound, (e.g. a mercaptan), maintaining at above 450‹ F. for at least 5 minutes in a soaking zone and heating the materials from the soaking zone at 850‹ F. to 1100‹ F. for 8 seconds to 110 seconds and an outlet pressure of 300-600 p.s.i.g.. Fig. 1 illustrates a process in which elemental sulphur 2 is mixed in an amount of 30-200 p.p.m. with a pyrolysis fuel oil, obtained as a by-product of the steam cracking of naphtha to produce olefins. The oil is heated at 11 and maintained in the soaking drum 4. A liquid product 5 from the drum 4 is heated at 15 and then quenched to about 750‹ F. with a stream 18 from a fractionating tower 12, reduced in pressure and passed to a flash tank 16. Vapour from the tank 16 and the vapour 3 from the drum 4 is passed to the fractionating tower 12. The converted fuel oil 9 from the tank 16 is blended with three times its volume of recycle 18 from the tower 12 and the blend heated to 850-950‹ F. prior to delayed coking.
