1513473 Silencers for IC engines YAMAHA HATSUDOKI KK 19 Aug 1975 [28 Aug 1974 29 Aug 1974 20 Nov 1974 (2) 29 Nov 1974 17 Dec 1974 19 Dec 1974 22 Jan 1975 (2) 3 March 1975 10 April 1975] 34473/75 Heading F1B Low frequency noise (300-1000Hz) is reduced by passing exhaust from an I.C. engine 2 into a silencer chamber 5 having a sound reflecting wall 5a and an outlet or outlets 17 set adjacent a node 12 formed by a standing wave of a dominant frequency. Several reflecting walls may be provided in an attempt to locate the nodes of standing waves of several frequencies adjacent the outlet(s). Alternatively the reflecting wall or the outlet can be made laterally movable for adjustment of the position of a node, according to engine speed or temperature. After passing from the silencer chamber 5, the gases may pass to a high frequency muffler and/or catalyst (not shown). The silencer chamber 5 and muffler may be mounted along the same axis, or (to reduce length) coaxially, or may be mounted one either side of a motor-bike chassis (not shown) and connected by a pipe. Reflective plates or an extra side extension (not shown) may also reduce the silencer length.
