Abstract

1407513 Electric couplings RAYCHEM CORP 8 June 1973 [12 June 1972] 27405/73 Heading H2E An electrical connector for coupling together cable conductors, comprises a shaped metallic connecting piece 10, of, e.g. copper or copper alloy, the end portions 11, 12 of which are shaped to receive a round 14, or flat 16, conductor respectively, which are bonded thereto by a flux and solder layer 17 on each contact surface. The connecting piece is enclosed in a heat-recoverable plastics sleeve 25 of, e.g. cross-linked polymeric material, and on the application of heat, by, e.g., hot-air, infra-red or induction means, the soldered bond is made, and the sleeve 25 shrinks onto the connecting piece, and over the cable insulation, 13 and 15. The connecting piece includes an open portion 12a in its cross section, so that the soldered joint may be inspected through the transparent sleeve 25. In Fig. 1, the connecting piece 10 comprises a U-shaped contact portion 11, and a flattened oval shaped contact portion 12, connected by portion 18. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, connecting piece 30 has a flat end 33 and a rounded end 34, with an inspection opening 35, and comprises an outer layer 31 of copper or beryllium copper alloy and inner layer 32 of solder alloy. A plurality of such connecting pieces 43, 44, 45 may be located in a heat recoverable connector member 40 with an open end 41 for receiving a flat cable, (Fig. 13, not shown) each conductor of which being connected to a flat portion 33, and a plurality of round conductors, from e.g. a multiconductor cable, being individually connected to the connecting pieces through open end 42. In other embodiments, (Figs. 9, 10, 11, 12, not shown), the connecting portions may be identical, i.e. round or flat, the flat connecting piece, (Fig. 11), having an intermediate protuberance, (63), to secure it within its sleeve, or the connecting piece, (65), may have a flat portion, and a round portion with slits (68), (69) which provide resilient action on entry of a plug pin therein.
