Abstract
1441319 Continuous casting COMINCO Ltd 26 Oct 1973 [31 Oct 1972] 49873/73 Heading B3F Molten metal, such as Pb-Ca, Pb-Li or Pb-Ca-Sn alloy prepared and protected by nitrogen or floating reductant in a reservoir 1, is maintained in a pool, at the surface of a rotating drum 23 which withdraws a sheet 24 of the solidified metal, by a trough 5 to which metal is introduced (by a pump 3) and from which excess metal is returned (by a pipe 20) after discharge over adjacent weirs 17, 18 at the ends of a holding section 6 and a casting section 7 respectively, the weirs being adjustable to determine their relative heights; a channel 8 beneath the weirs connects the two sections and a baffle 11 (with holes 29) evens the distribution of metal across the holding section 6 while there is an immersed baffle 28 by which argon can be retained in a chamber 30 over the holding section 6 and weirs 18, 19. A baffle 12 causes downflow and an inclined baffle 13 directs dross and surging metal over the weir 17. Gas bubbles rising from the end 22 of the plate 21 which defines the top of the channel 8 are passed by a baffle 31 to the chamber 30 or by an alternative baffle 311 towards the end of casting section 7. Plate 21, forming a unit 14 with weirs 17, 18 and a return conduit 20, may be raised or lowered to control the flow to the casting section. After casting starts the section 7 may be covered. The drum 23 is internally water-cooled.
