Abstract

1333338 Cleaning tanks BUTTERWORTH SYSTEM Inc 28 April 1972 19907/72 Heading A4F [Also in Divisions B2 F1 F2] A tank washing machine comprises a washing liquid supply pipe 4 communicating with a housing 5 (Fig.1, not shown) rotatable about its longitudinal axis and carrying a nozzle (10) rotatable about an angle to its own longitudinal axis and at an angle to the axis of rotation of the housing, a turbine 11 actuated by the flow of washing liquid for rotating the nozzle housing and the nozzle, and means for vaying the angle which each of the turbine blades makes relative to the flow of washing liquid whereby the rotational speed of the turbine and thereby the rotational speeds of the nozzle and nozzle housing may be controlled. A shaft 12 carrying the turbine 11 is rotated thereby and rotates via gears 14, 15, a shaft 17, clutch members 18, 19 and bevel gears 20, 25 and 21, 26, a shaft 8 and the pipe 4, respectively. The shaft 7 which drives worm gearing to rotate the nozzle about a horizontal axis, and the pipe 4, which carries the housing 5, rotate at different speeds, the gears 20, 25, and 21, 26 having different gear ratios. The gears 20, 21 are secured to a shaft 22 in screwthreaded engagement with a rod 28 carrying springs 36, 37 between stops 34, 35 and engaging a shoulder 27 on the shaft 17. The rotating shaft 22 moves the shaft 28 to the left to compress spring 37 and release spring 36 until shaft 17 is suddenly moved to engage clutch members 18, 23 to reverse the directions of rotation of shaft 7 and pipe 4, and of the shaft 22 whereby the clutch members 18, 19 re-engage after an interval so that the directions of rotation reverse repeatedly. The horizontal movement of the shaft 28 rotates via rack and pinion 31, 38 a cam 30 to pivot lever 41 and move longitudinally a rod 13 having a square sectioned end 45 with inclined grooves 49 which move relatively to pins 48 on lever 47 to alter the inclination of the tubine blades 46.
