Abstract

1329094 Moulding reinforced foamed plastics articles PROFILE EXPANDED PLASTICS Ltd 11 Dec 1970 [22 Dec 1969] 62337/69 Heading B5A In a method of producing a foamed plastics (e.g. polystyrene or polyurethane) article having a reinforcing insert at least partially embedded therein, the insert is first coated with a solution of a heat-activatable adhesive on a surface to be embedded in the article the solvent evaporated, and the insert supported in a mould, the article being formed by foaming for example preexpanded polystyrene beads in the mould; the adhesive, which is activated by the heat of the moulding operation and hardens when the article is cooled, ensures that the insert is rigidly secured to the foamed plastics. The insert may be of wood, plywood, hardboard, chipboard, blockboard, light gauge metals, or plastics sheets, and may be supported in the mould by an adhesive which loses its adhesive properties when subjected to the heat of the moulding operation. The example relates to a polystyrene article having a wooden insert, and the invention may be applied to the production of boat hulls or seating furniture. Specification 1,261,718 is referred to.
