Abstract

1314080 Gas filtering JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP 27 Oct 1970 [27 Oct 1969] 50904/70 Heading BIT Submicron particles of liquid or solid are filtered from a gaseous effluent by passing it through a web of bonded or unbonded glass fibres of diameter up to 10 microns at a velocity of at least 300 feet per minute and at a pressure drop of at least 8 inches of water measured across the clean web. Fig. 1 illustrates a suitable filter wherein the web is fed progressively from roll 28 to roll 38 round the perforate shell of drum 10, being separated therefrom by endless screen 32. Filtered gas is drawn from one end of the drum. Alternatively the web may be fed across a flat support plate. Or the web is formed on a support by feeeding the fibres into the incoming gas. Fixed bonded fibre webs may be used after coating the upstream surfaces with asbestos fibres fed into the gas in the manner of a filter aid. Densities, thicknesses and fibre sizes of suitable webs are exemplified.
