Abstract
1390359 Preparing lubricating oil SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 7 April 1972 [13 May 1971] 14625/71 Heading C5E A lubricating oil of high viscosity index is obtained by hydrocracking a mixture of heavy hydrocarbons over a fluoride-containing supported catalyst comprising (a) Ni and (b) Mo and /or W, substantially all the fluorine present having been incorporated therein by fluoriding in situ. Preferred supports are Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 - MgO or SiO 2 -ZrO 2 . The catalyst may be in sulphide form. The hydrocracking may be carried out at 325-450‹ C. and 10-250 bar. The hydrocrackate may be subsequently hydrofinished at lower temperature over a similarly fluorided catalyst. The fluorine may be added to the liquid feed in the form of an organic compound, e.g. o-fluorotoluene or difluoroethane.
