Abstract
1388552 Sulphur dioxide FOSTER WHEELER Ltd 9 May 1972 [17 May 1971] 15348/71 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions F1 F4 and C5] Sulphur dioxide is prepared in a fluidized bed combustion apparatus comprising an upper fluidized bed 82 and a lower fluidized bed 84, tubes 16 in which the turbine working fluid is heated being disposed within the upper bed. A pipe 86 is provided by which particles may overflow to the lower bed. Fuel is supplied to the lower bed through line 40 and air through line 88, the major part of the air being supplied through line 90 to the upper bed. The particles in the lower bed may be calcium or magnesium oxide particles, and sulphur contained in the fuel reacts with the oxide particles to give calcium or magnesium sulphide particles. A continual withdrawal of particles from the lower bed takes place through line 92 to a further fluidized bed 94 which is fluidized by hot air from line 96. The calcium or magnesium sulphide reacts with the air to give sulphur dioxide and calcium oxide particles; the calcium or magnesium oxide particles return through line 98 to the bed 84. The gases from the bed 94 containing SO 2 leave through line 100 and the sulphur dioxide is recovered.
