Abstract

1378973 Electro-plating with chromium M & T CHEMICALS Inc 16 June 1972 [18 June 1971] 28322/72 Heading C7B Cr (e.g. micro-crack Cr having at least 40 microcracks per cm) is electro-plated from an aqueous bath containing (a) hexavalent Cr ions, (b) sulphate or simple or complex fluoride ions, and (c) sulphoacetic acid, isethionate or isethionic acid (i.e CH 2 OH CH 2 SO 3 H). Specified bath constituents are chromic acid, H 2 SO 4 and sulphates of NH 4 , Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca and Sr; La<SP>3+</SP>; F-, SiF 6 <SP>2-</SP>. BF 4 <SP>-</SP> AlF 6 <SP>3-</SP>, PF 6 <SP>-</SP>, ZrF 6 <SP>-</SP> and TiF 6 <SP>2-</SP>; soluble Se compounds such as selenic or selenous acid or specified salts or lower alkyl esters thereof; and Ce salts such as carbonate, fluoride and sulphate. The Cr electro-plate may be at least 1 x 10<SP>-4</SP>mm thick. The electro-plating may be at 30-70‹C. The micro-crack Cr may be electro-deposited on to a substrate bearing previously electro-deposited hard Cr or, in the Examples, is electro-deposited on to brass panels bearing previously electrodeposited Ni. The Cr may be deposited to provide bearing surfaces or wear-resistant surfaces.
