Abstract
1377449 N,N<SP>1</SP> - bridged - bis - (2 - alkyl - 2- hydroxy ethylamine) compounds STERLING DRUG Inc 2 April 1973 15743/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R is C 3 to C 15 alkyl or C 4 to C 7 cycloalkyl, R<SP>1</SP> is H or C 1 to C 4 non-tertiary alkyl, X is C 2 to C 12 alkylene with bonds to the nitrogen atoms at different carbon atoms or X<SP>1</SP>-Y-X<SP>11</SP> wherein X<SP>1</SP> and X<SP>11</SP> are C 1 to C 4 alkylene groups with bonds to Y and to the nitrogen atoms at the same or different carbon atoms and Y is C 4 to C 7 cycloalkylene with bonds to X<SP>1</SP> and X<SP>11</SP> at the same or different carbon atoms, phenylene, vinylene or ethynylene. The sum of the number of carbon atoms of R and X is at least 9. Z is H or, when R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 to C 4 non-tertiary alkyl; N- phenylcarbamoyl or N-phenyl carbamoyl substituted in the benzene ring by one to three non- tertiary C 1 to C 4 alkyl groups, halo or C 1 to C 4 non-tertiary alkoxy groups, or by a trifluoromethyl, acetamido, nitro or methyl-sulphonyl group. The compounds include acid addition salts. When Z is H and R<SP>1</SP> is non-tertiary alkyl, the compound can be an N,N<SP>1</SP>-dioxide, an N,N<SP>1</SP>- di(non-tertiary C 1 to C 4 alkyl) diammonium quaternary salt or an N,N<SP>1</SP>-dibenzyl diammonium quaternary salt. The compounds are useful as antibacterial agents.
