Abstract

1367499 Non-woven fabrics NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP 12 Nov 1971 [2 Dec 1970] 52764/71 Heading D2B [Also in Division B5] A non-woven web is made by conventional papermaking methods from an aqueous fibrous dispersion which includes a polymeric binding agent in fibrous form, the fibrous binding agent having been prepared by a method comprising introducing an anionic latex of a polymer having a glass transition temperature of from -52‹C to +25‹C selected from polymers having an anionic backbone and polymers having a neutral backbone in filamentary form into an agitated preciptating aqueous solution having a temperature of 40-180‹F and containing 0.3-5% by wt. of a water-soluble cationic polymer. The fibrous dispersion may comprise either alone or in combination natural fibres, e.g. wool, cotton, hemp, synthetic organic fibres, e.g. rayon, nylon, polyesters, acrylics, polyolefins, polyurethanes, or inorganic fibres, e.g. asbestos, glass, ceramic or metallic fibres. The anionic latex may be a homo- or copolymer of monomers selected from vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinyl esters of α-branched saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, vinylidene chloride, alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, butadiene, acrylonitrile, and styrene, and may also contain a monomer selected from N-methylol acrylamide, and ethylenically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acids. The water-soluble cationic polymer may be selected from acid salts of aminoalkyl esters of carboxylic acid polymers, high M.W. polysulfur amidoamines, copolymers of #-hydroxyalkyl ethylenically unsaturated ester with vinyl tertiary amine, polyamine polymers, polyalkyleneimine polymers, amine modified acrylamide polymers, quaternary amine-containing polymers, cationic starches. The web may be dried and pressed such that the binding agent is softened and envelops the other fibres of the web.
