Abstract

1364664 Dynamo-electric machines; controlling rectifiers; control of DC motors WAHL CLIPPER CORP 25 Nov 1971 [3 Dec 1970] 54833/71 Headings H2A H2J and H2F [Also in Division B4] An electric hair clipper includes a D.C. electric motor with a permanent magnet stator field assembly 30, Fig. 1, having an L/D ratio in excess 'of 1.25 and a diameter less than 1À25 inches, the motor further including a commutator 33 connected to a wound rotor 32 energized from a power supply connected to the A.C. mains and arranged to cause the motor to have a no load speed at least 15% below the design no-load speed of the motor. The hair clipper has a two part casing 11 in the lower part 12 of which the motor is mounted by straps 37, 38, 39 secured to bosses on the casing and passing over bearings 35, 36 and stator 30 respectively. The stator has a split cylindrical housing 50 in which are mounted two magnetized members 51, 52 with their magnetic axes offset by between five and fifteen degrees. The rotor drives the movable cutting blade 16 through a cam. The power supply includes a bridge rectifier 83, 84, 85, 86, Fig. 6, in the output arm of which are connected the rotor winding 56 and, as shown, an SCR 90. The conduction angle of the SCR is determined by an RC network 94, 95, 96 and 91, the voltage across capacitor 91 firing a bi-lateral diode 106 which in turn triggers the SCR. The no-load speed is set by the variable resistor 96. In use, variation of potentiometer 95 allows speed variation. 95 may be replaced by fixed resistors. The motor current is increased with mechanical load by increasing the conduction angle of SCR 90. Increasing load reduces motor speed; back e.m.f. of winding 56 falls and charging rate of capacitor 91 increases. The SCR and its associated circuitry may be replaced by a Zener diode (76) in parallel with a switch (78), Fig. 5 (not shown), the arrangement providing two speeds according to whether the switch is open or closed.
