Abstract

1359608 Folding and finishing edges of non- metallic sheet material CELANESE CORP 27 July 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 35115/72 Heading B5K [Also in Division D1] A bonded non-woven fabric of randomly-laid filaments, which fabric has irregular edges and edge portions thinner than the central portion, is formed and fed under tension to a folding guide 18 having parallel edges spaced apart by the width of the desired product, edge portions of the fabric are folded through 180 degrees around the guide edges and the product is passed between calender rolls 22. As shown, an extruder 10 deposits thermoplastic filamentary material 12 on to collector means 14, e.g. parallel rolls positioned so that the central axis of the material 12 intersects the nip thereof at a right angle. Nozzles 20 direct air or gas on to the irregular tapered edges of the material 12 to fold these edges through 180 degrees one under and the other over the guide 18, Fig. 3. Preferably, the guide 18 comprises two flat segments adjustable within the plane thereof. After passing between calender rolls 22, the fabric is wound on a roll 24 or may be passed into condensing means to form cigarette filter rods. Suitable thermoplastic materials are specified (see Division D1).
