Abstract

1354650 Guiding rail vehicles; steering vehicles FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 19 Sept 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 43332/72 Headings B7L and B7H A vehicle for a guided transportation system comprises a vehicle support structure 12 having an axle 14 pivotably connected thereto at a pin 18, the axle having pneumatic tyres 16 thereon for running on a roadbed (not shown), the vehicle also having switch arms 26, 28 each with a switch wheel 22, 24 movable between an inoperative position (shown for the wheel 24) and an operative position (shown for the wheel 22) wherein the wheel engages with a guide rail, as 76, at switch points in the roadbed to guide the vehicle, and the switch arms 26, 28 being operated by two hydraulic piston and cylinder units 42, 44 and 58, 60 are connected between pivot pins 54, 56 on the switch arms and the other between a pivot pin 70 on the axle 14 and a bracket 74 on the piston rod 44 of the other unit, such that, starting from the position in which both arms 26, 28 are in their inoperative positions, extension of the piston rod 44 moves the arm 26 to its operative position (as shown) and subsequent extension of the piston rod 60 then actuates the arm 26 and moves the arm 28 to its operative position, thus ensuring that both arms 26, 28 cannot be deployed at once. The arms 26, 28 are mounted on respective pins 34, 38 on the axle 14 and the hydraulic cylinders 42, 58 contain springs 48, 64 to return their respective piston rods to retracted positions on release of the hydraulic pressure applied thereto for purposes of actuation and to act as a failsafe mechanism, bringing both arms 26, 28 to their inoperative positions.
