Abstract
1346588 Cross-linked ethylene polymer sheets DOW CORNING Ltd 29 Sept 1971 [14 Oct 1970] 48881/70 Addition to 1286460 Heading C3P Sheets and films of cross-linked polyolefins are prepared by (A) reacting polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with a minor proportion of propylene and/or butylene with a silane RR<SP>1</SP>SiY 2 where R is a monovalent olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon ether radical, Y is a hydrolysable organic radical and R<SP>1</SP> is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, R or Y, in the presence of a compound capable of generating free radical sites in the polyolefin and having a half-life at the reaction temperature which is above 140‹ C. of less than 6 minutes, (B) mixing the product with a silanol condensation catalyst, (C) forming the mixture into a sheet or film having a thickness over at least a part of its area of less than 0À010 inch and (D) exposing the sheet or film to water. Preferred silanes are vinyl trimethoxysilane and vinyl triethoxysilane. The sheets and films may be obtained by casting, extruding or extruding and blowing and may be embossed and/or stretched, or biaxially stretched and quenched to provide heat shrinkable films. In examples films are prepared from polyethylene reacted with vinyl trimethoxysilane in the presence of dicumyl peroxide.
