Abstract
1342475 Measuring bore hole attitude electrically AW RUSSELL 3 Nov 1971 [11 Nov 1970] 53552/70 Heading G1N To determine the orientation of a drilling tool in a bore hole 10 Fig. 1, the components B x , B y of the earth's magnetic field are measured along X and Y axes perpendicular to the longitudinal Z axis of the tool and borehole by flex gate devices mounted on the tool and the measurements are used to calculate the roll angle # at the bottom of the hole using known relationships with the resultant direction of the earths field and previously ascertained values of the azimuth angle # and pitch angle 6. The azimuth, pitch and dip angles determine the value of the angle # Fig.5 between the bore hole high-side and the direction of the earth's magnetic field B. The two magnetic components B X , B Y are combined in a resolver to find the angle Y and the angle #, equal to E-Y, is obtained by adjustment of the pointer or scale of the resolver. The angle # is used to control the steering of the drilling tool motor.
