Abstract
1,236,082. Arcing preventing in switches. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. 10 April, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 17320/68. Heading H1N. [Also in Division H2] An overload protective arrangement for A.C. or D.C. apparatus, machines or feeder circuits which may be superconducting, comprises a superconducting element D to which a magnetic field is applied when a fault occurs so that the element D becomes normallyconducting and limits the excess or shortcircuit current. The magnetic field is provided by a coil Sp surrounding the element D, the coil being energized when the fault current reaches a predetermined magnitude or has a predetermined rate of rise. As shown, a spark gap is triggered by the current induced in the secondary winding W 2 of a current transformer and permits a charged capacitor C to discharge through the coil Sp. A main circuit-breaker S is opened to interrupt the residual current through the element D, this circuit-breaker closing its auxiliary contacts HS so that the capacitor is recharged from a battery B. A thyristor may be used instead of the spark gap, Fig. 13 (not shown); and an iron wire resistor may be connected across the superconducting element D, Fig. 11 (not shown).
