The rotary latch-bolt 18 of a vehicle door latch engages a fixed striker pin 12 in a fork 18a and has a pair of teeth 18b, 18c engaged by a latching pawl 19 disposed on the opposite side of the fork from the pivot 16 of the latchbolt 18, so that an impact at the striker-pin is distributed equally between the pin 16 and the pawl 19. The bolt 18 is biassed to the releasing position by spring 20, and the pawl 19 is biassed to the engaging position by spring 22. This pawl is released by downward movement of ledge 19b by a handle &c., not shown. Vertical rattle of the door is prevented by a spring-loaded wedge 23 engaging a flat on the end 12a of the striker-pin. The head 12a of the striker pin prevents accidental disengagement from the bolt under stress (Fig. 10, not shown). In the form shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the relative positions of the latch-bolt and the pawl are inverted, and in addition, the area of the bolt subjected to the opening impact (P4, Fig. 9, not shown) lies directly between the pivot 16' and the pawl 19' for greater strength. Lateral disengagement of the pawl from the latch-bolt is prevented by side-cheeks 54a (55), Fig 13, or by a slot and edge (Fig. 15, not shown). The latch-grip in the intermediate latched position is improved in Fig. 18 by an additional spring- load lever 58 which partially hooks with the striker-pin in this position.
