Abstract

1,217,449. Polymerizing ethylene. LEUNAWERKE "WALTER ULBRICHT" VEB. 10 April, 1969, No. 18535/69. Heading C3P. Ethylene is polymerized or copolymerized with copolymerizable compounds, optionally in the presence of further co-reagents, by free radicals at above 50 atmospheres and above 50‹ C., by a process in which polymerization is initiated by radicals obtained by thermal and/or catalytic decomposition of the ethylene, comonomer and/or co-reagent, the decomposition point(s) of which is (are) at least 50‹ C. above the reaction temperature. Specified comonomers are propylene, vinyl esters, acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters, vinyl halides, allyl compounds and carbon monoxide. Specified co-reagents are hydrogen, ethane, propane, sulphur dioxide, methanol and acetone. Initiation may be effected by a high voltage discharge such as a spark or arc, or by means of an incandescent wire, e.g. of platinum. Stabilizers, e.g. 2,6 - di - t - butylp-cresol may be present in the reaction mixture, and the process may be effected batchwise or continuously, with initiation at one or more points. Examples describe the polymerization of (1) ethylene, optionally in the presence of (2) hydrogen, (3) vinyl acetate, (4) propane and (5) ethane, with initiation by (1-3 and 5) electrically heated wires and (4) spark gaps.
