Abstract

1,214,850. Determination of volatile impurities. SENTRALINSTITUTT FOR INDUSTRIELL FORSKNING. 28 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 58912/67. Heading B1X. A process for determining the non-metallic volatiles content of a sample comprises heating the sample 1 under such conditions as to volatilise the volatiles and to generate a gaseous or vapour material, condensing the material in cooled arm 10 of a U tube, arm 10 being sealed at one end, closing the other end of arm 10 by raising the liquid level in tube 18 above the base of the U, evaporating the material in arm 10 and measuring its pressure and volume manometrically. The volatiles may themselves be condensable or may react with another material, for example oxygen obtained by heating copper oxide 5 to 550‹ to 750‹C. When reservoir 13 contains mercury, a constant volume space above the mercury column in arm 10 may be obtained automatically by controlling the supply of air to reservoir 13 in response to a signal obtained when the mercury reaches a contact 19. There are references to determining volatiles in samples of metals, alloys, metal oxides or sulphides, coated welding electrodes, wood, cellulose, food, textiles, and especially to determination of hydrogen in A1, Cu, Fe, Ni, and also to determination of carbon dioxide and water as impurities in noble gases.
