Abstract

1,212,657. Vacuum switches. BROWN BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 9 Sept., 1969 [11 Sept., 1968], No. 44419/69. Heading H1N. A vacuum switch has separate contact pairs 9, 9a and 7, 8 of different materials for respectively closing and opening the circuit, one of the making contacts 9 being held ahead of its breaking contact 8 by a bi-stable mechanism 10 during closing and retracted during an interruption. The making and breaking contacts are arranged concentrically with the making contacts in the middle. In the fixed contact assembly they are rigidly connected; in the moving assembly contact 9 is connected electrically and mechanically to the contact 8 by a snap-acting disc 10 and has a stem 12 extending centrally through that of contact 8. During closing contact 9 first engages with 9a and is pushed back so that the disc 10 snaps overcentre just as the contacts 7, 8 engage; at the end of an opening movement the stem 12 strikes a fixed pin 11 to be pushed back into the projecting position. The making contacts are of tungsten or an alloy thereof; the breaking contacts of copper or an alloy thereof.
