Abstract
1,202,926. Jointing; welding by fusion; brazing; soldering; punching. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 25 July, 1968 [1 Aug., 1967], No. 35339/67. Heading B3R, B3V and B3W. In a method of securing metal parts together prior to a jointing operation (e.g. soldering, brazing, dip brazing, welding or the use of adhesive) lugs are produced at the edge of at least one part by removing a portion of the metal of the part and inserting a metal lug, Fig. 2(a), and slots or holes are produced on another part such that the lug fits snugly into one of said slots or holes. To insert a lug, Fig. 1, an edge of a part 1 is placed in a stepped die 2 and a part thereof semisheared by a punch 3 into a recess 4, a piece 5 of the same material as the part is placed over the edge and the punch 3 presses it into the part to form the lug and complete the shearing of the semisheared material. The lug forming and inserting thereof by this method, may be carried out simultaneously on two parts to join them to each other, Fig. 3 (not shown). Alternatively a lug may be inserted at an angle to the other part so that a portion of the lug 6, Fig. 2(b), extends on the far side of the part and may be twisted to obtain better retention in the slot. The brazing may be effected in a salt bath or the soldering in an oven, using a soldering paste. Silver solder may be used.
