Abstract

1,274,528. Discharge tubes; cathode processing. S.A.E.S. GETTERS S.p.A. 9 Sept., 1969 [13 Sept., 1968], No. 44496/69. Heading H1D. A metal vapour generator comprising a hollow tube 11 containing a metal vapour releasing substance 22 has an opening 21 to permit escape of the metal vapour, at least one terminal 23 having a cross-section of the same size and geometric shape as the cross-section of the tube, and at least one retainer 14 holding the end of the terminal against the end of the terminal against the end of the tube, whereby the metal vapour releasing substance 22 is held in the tube. The sides 31, 32 and tabs 33, 34 of the retainer 14 are bent to conform to the shape of the terminal 23 and tube 11 and are then secured in place, e.g. by spot welding. The tube 11 is made of metal of high ohmic resistance, e.g. an 80% Ni, 20% Cr, alloy suitable for heating by passage of current. The substance 22 may be a mixture of a particulate alkali metal chromate and a particulate reducing agent, e.g. one part by weight CsCrO 4 and two parts by weight Si, an alloy of Ba and Al, or a mixture of a mercury compound and a reducing agent. The generator may be used to release alkali metal vapours to form photo-sensitive surfaces in television pick-up, photo-multiplier, image intensifier or other vacuum tubes. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the terminal 23 is secured to a flexible S-shaped strip to allow for thermal expansion.
