Abstract
1,258,529. Electron lenses. SONY CORP. 19 Dec., 1969 [19 Dec., 1968], No. 62128/69. Heading H1D. A focusing lens for a cathode-ray display tube comprising outer cylindrical electrodes 17a and 18a, Fig. 2, operated at a high potential and an intermediate electrode system 16a operated at a generally lower potential, is characterized in that the intermediate system includes at least three annular electrodes of which the centre one is at a higher potential. In the system shown, there are exactly three electrodes 30-32 of which the centre one 31 is connected to the electrodes 17a and 18a, and the outer electrodes 30 and 32 are maintained at a lower potential. This reduces the potential gradient of the lens field, thereby reducing spherical aberration. The lens may be used in a colour display tube of the type wherein three coplanar beams are directed through the centre of the lens and are subsequently converged on a shadow mask or grill by means of electrostatic deflection plates (Fig. 4, not shown).
