1,253,581. Metallurgical converters. EISENWERK - GESELLSCHAFT MAXIMILIANSHUTTE m.b.H. 19 Feb., 1969 [24 Feb., 1968; 13 Aug., 1968; 14 Jan., 1969; 30 Jan., 1969 (2)], No. 9069/69. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] A steelmaking converter is provided with a removable bottom having blowing nozzles each of which is constructed to blow in a jet of oxygen surrounded by a sheath of shielding gas, a part of the converter bottom being free of nozzles. The latter may all be located in one half of the bottom, may be arranged in groups, or may, in a converter of circular cross-section be all located on a diameter, preferably parallel to the tilting axis. One or more of the nozzles may be inclined at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the converter and may be used to assist in discharging slag. Each nozzle may consist of an oxygen pipe surrounded by a pipe for sheath gas, the two pipes being separated by spacers such as a wire helix, spacer ribs, or sintered metal or refractory. The diameter of each oxygen pipe is preferably not more than 1/35 of the depth of metal in the converter, while the total nozzle cross-sectional area in sq. cm. should substantially equal the capacity of the converter in metric tonnes.
