Abstract

1,249,674. Leaf-wilting and/or leaf desiccation. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 28 Nov., 1968, No. 56578/68. Heading C1B. A method of wilting or desiccating the leaves of plants, to increase efficiency in harvesting the plants, comprises applying a composition containing (a) 65 to 90% of a C 5-15 unsubstituted, saturated, branched aliphatic carboxylic acid or anhydride (e.g. neo-decanoic acid), (b) 3 to 10% of an emulsifier (e.g. an octylphenolethoxylate), and the balance (c) a solvent being a heavy aromatic naphtha, kerosene, diesel oil, paraffinic spray oil, aromatic hydrocarbons, or mixtures thereof; the quantities of (a), (b) and (c) being employed in said ranges in amounts giving a leaf-wilting or chlorophyll-bleaching phytotoxicity rating of at least 6 (as determined by formulµ given in the Specification). Suitable compositions are claimed, and may contain as optional components co-solvents or water. Preferred solvents have aromatic contents up to 25% or from 65% to 100%.
