Abstract

[Also in Division B3] A pulsed laser is used to produce a stencil or similar perforated duplicating or printing plate by modulating the laser pulses and moving either the laser or the stencil. A CO 2 or argon laser is used which is Q-switched by a saturable absorption cell and has its output pulses modulated by an electro-optical cell or a deflecting mirror, modulation being controlled by the output of a photomultiplier which scans the original to be duplicated. The original and stencil may be mounted on a single rotating drum or separate synchronized drums. The photomodulator output controls the electrooptical cell in such a manner that the formation of a multiplicity of closely spaced apertures for passing ink through the stencil is inhibited when a white area of the original is scanned. A wax stencil may be used, or for repeated duplicating or printing runs a polyester film or a non-reflective thin metal sheet or foil may be provided.
