1,111,384. Measuring moisture content. MICROWAVE INSTRUMENTS Ltd. and J. BILBROUGH. Dec.4, 1964 [Dec. 5, 1963], No.48135/63. Headings G1N and G1U. The moisture content of a sample is deduced from the change in Q of a microwave resonance cavity upon insertion of the sample into one of two holes 4, 5 located in regions of different electric field strength to provide two sensitivity ranges. The cavity has a tuning piston 13 and the power input waveguide 3 may be matched to the cavity by adjusting screws 14. An arrangement is described in which the source frequency is swept through resonance in a sawtooth waveform and the amplitude vs frequency curve of the detector 7 output is displayed on an oscilloscope. Quartz tubes may replace the sample holes to enable continuous monitoring of a flowing medium. Calibration measurements may be made with a water-free sample.
