Abstract
A detonating fuse composition comprises an intimate mixture of, by weight, 40-80% of a particulate cap-sensitive high explosive, 15-50% of a polymeric metallocarboxylate elastomer, and 1-20% of a plasticizer. Also present may be up to 25% of a polyurethane elastomer formed, for example, from a polyether and a diisocyanate. The explosive component may be one or more of PETN, RDX, tetryl, TNT, HMX, mannitol hexanitrate, tetranitrodibenzo-1,3a, 4,6a-tetraazopentalene, diazodinitrophenol, hexamethylene triperoxydiamine, picrysulphone, potassium dinitroacetonitrile, and lead azide. The metallocarboxylate elastomer is formed in situ by reaction of a carboxylic copolymer with a polyvalent metal ion; a preferred copolymer is derived from butadiene-1,3, acrylonitrile, and methacrylic acid, but many other copolymers are referred to. The metal ion source may be provided by a metal oxide, hydroxide, or salt, or by finely-divided metal. A number of suitable plasticizers are listed, for example triethylene glycol di-2-ethyl hexoate. The explosive composition may also contain stabilizers, colouring agents, odorants, antioxidants, and retardants. An aqueous dispersion of the carboxylate copolymer may be mixed with the other constituents and the mixture dried, shaped by rolling or extrusion, and finally cured. The formed articles may be reinforced with threads or yarns of nylon or other material. An apparatus is shown for making a detonating fuse of improved flexibility by extruding the composition around a central reinforcing thread. In examples of the composition, the explosives are PETN, tetryl, and RDX, and other components not specified above are di-beta-naphthyl-p-phenylene diamine, stearic acid, zinc oxide, lead oxide, dibutyl phthalate, and 4,41-methylene-bis(2-chloroaniline).
