Abstract

1,199,653. Fuel elements. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 29 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 59031/67. Addition to 1,147,233. Heading G6C. A spacer as described in the parent Specification 1,147,233 has the springs in the form of bent strips of varying width in order to provide decreased coolant flow resistance. A flat sheet metal blank for manufacturing one fuel rod location of a spacer according to the invention is shown in Fig. 2, the grid parts of the spacer being designated 1 and the spring parts 2. The blank is first bent so that the spring parts 2 obtain transverse protuberances midway between their ends, and is then bent to form a body in which the grid parts 1 each adopt a square configuration with bevelled corners, this body being intended to house one fuel rod. The whole spacer is then built up of such bodies. The protuberances in the spring strips 2 are formed by bending the latter at the lines 3, 4 and 5 so that the portion immediately adjacent to the line 4 forms the top of the protuberance, this being the part which abuts the fuel rod. The strips 2 are widest immediately before and after the protuberance and have a somewhat narrower abutment head at the top of the protuberance. Those portions of the grid parts 1 from which the strips 2 extend are wider than the intermediate portions.
