Abstract
1,174,255. Mobile luffing arm apparatus. A. VALLA and G. E. VALLA, [trading as ANTONIA VALLA & C.S.N.C.]. 15 Dec., 1966 [22 Dec., 1965], No. 56272/66. Heading B8H. Mechanical handling apparatus comprises a frame support 1, an extendible and pivotable boom 2, a pair of double-acting cylinder and piston means including cylinders 20, 27 connected at spaced apart points to the support 1 and pistons 21, 28 connected to which are pistonrods 22, 29, the effective area of the piston 21 facing the support 1 being equal to that of the piston 28 facing away from the support 1, a rigid member 31 interconnecting the rods 22, 29, and fluid pressure supply means including valves 15, 36 which are operable selectively so that the member 31 is moved towards or away from the support 1 without changing its inclination thereto or is inclined in either direction relative to the support 1. The cylinder and piston means 20 . . . 22 is connected within the boom 2 and is used to extend or retract the latter, and the cylinder and piston means 27 . . , 29 is connected between a link 25 and the member 31 to which is connected a fork 35, the cylinder and piston means and the members 25, 31 making an articulated quadrilateral. In operation, the fork 35 may retain its orientation relative to the ground while the boom is moved, or it may be tilted relative to the ground, by appropriate operation of the valves 15, 36. The fork may be replaced by a shovel.
