Abstract

1,161,169. Reforming. MOBIL OIL CORP. 4 May, 1967 [4 May, 1966], .No. 20816/67. Heading C5E. A process for upgrading naphtha comprises contacting a charge naphtha in the presence of hydrogen with a reforming catalyst effective for converting hydrocarbon components of the naphtha to other hydrocarbons of higher octane number than charge components by reactions which include dehydrogenation of naphthenes to yield aromatics and hydrogen, thereafter passing hydrocarbon products of said reforming step consisting essentially of a mixture of aromatic and paraffinic components in admixture with hydrogen in contact with a shapeselective crystalline aluminosilicate hydrocracking catalyst having a silica to alumina ratio of at least 3À0 and a pore size of 4À5 to 6 Angstrom units, said shape-selective crystalline aluminosilicate having cracking and hydrogenation-dehydrogenation activity substantially limited to its internal pore structure whereby a further increase in octane number of the charge naphtha is obtained by selectively hydrocracking normal paraffins to compounds boiling below naphtha hydrocarbon. The reforming catalyst may include alumina with or without platinum, palladium, osmium, iridium, ruthenium or rhodium and may also contain the oxides of silicon, magnesium, zirconium, thorium, vanadium, titanium, or boron. It-may-be -promoted with chlorine or fluorine. The reforming catalyst may also include a crystalline aluminosilicate the pore size of which is sufficiently large to allow passage therein of substantially all the compounds contained in the charge. The selective catalyst comprises a porous material having pores of 4À5 to 6 Angstroms and may also contain one or more of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, iron, platinum, or palladium with or without tungsten. The porous material may be a natural or synthetic aluminosilicate or a porous carbon.
