Abstract
1,149,832. Electro-chemical analysis. STANDARD OIL CO. Feb.21, 1967 [Feb.21, 1966], No.8087/67. Heading GIN. The nitrogen content of a nitrogen-containing material is determined by a process comprising catalytically converting the nitrogen to ammonia and automatically titrating the ammonia electrochemically. The nitrogen-containing material may be converted to ammonia over a heated nickel/magnesia catalyst in the presence of humidified hydrogen in tube 2. The ammonia is introduced into the titration zone of cell 4 and is detected by sensing electrode pair 12, 14, causing imbalance between the potential difference between these electrodes and a reference potential. The imbalance is applied as a signal causing the generation of hydrogen ions by electrodes 8, 10. The amount of electricity required to produce enough hydrogen ions to restore the balance is a measure of the amount of nitrogen in the material under test.
