Abstract
1,060,730. Sheet forming. FORMEX MANUFACTURING Inc. Dec. 24, 1963 [Dec. 31, 1962], No. 51002/63. Heading B5A. Hollow articles, e.g. mannequin trunks, are vacuum moulded from two sheets of thermoplastic material the upper sheet being clamped between pivoted upper frames 71, 63, resiliently depending from a wheeled carriage 49 and the lower sheet being clamped between lower frames 73, 78 carried by a second carriage 45. The carriages carrying the thus clamped sheets are moved along tracks (36), (37) and (47), (48) from their original position, between upper and lower piston-operated vacuum moulds valves 23, 32, to a position between upper intermediate and lower heating elements 42, 41, 40, and are returned thereto after sufficient heating. The mould halves are then forwarded to the position shown in the Figure and the sheets vacuum formed, after which the halves are further forwarded to depress frame 71, 63 relative to carriage 49 thus enabling the edges of the mould halves to engage one another and fuse the sheets therebetween, thus forming a completely closed article (see Fig. 4, not shown). In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), the mould halves are first closed to force the sheets and the hollow article then vacuum formed.
