Abstract
1,056,772. Physiological measuring apparatus. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Feb. 5, 1964, No. 4792/64. Heading A5K. [Also in Divisions G1 and H4] Apparatus for measuring heart rate, respiration rate and respiration volume comprises a pair of spaced electrodes 10,10', for application to the body connected to a direct current power supply and a differential amplifier, the input signal (due to changes in the impedance of the body between the electrodes as a function of respiration and to voltage variations of the heart) being fed to the amplifier to produce a direct current output signal. The output signal may be frequency-modulated and transmitted by wires of antennae to a recording device, e.g. a tape recorder or oscilloscope. Electrodes 10,10' in the form of tantalum or stainless steel needles, buttons or hooks, extend laterally from a substrate 12 (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) which may be implanted in or attached to the body. A miniature direct current source, e.g. mercury or cadmium cells or a stomach generator is connected to the substrate. The substrate has deposited thereon the differential amplifier which includes transistors 40,42, an emitter follower including a transistor 64, a tunnel diode oscillator 70, operating at a frequency of about 84 Mc/s, and a telemetry link (Fig. 2, not shown) having antenna 16. The output comprises an electrocardiogram superimposed upon a respiration volume signal, which signals, owing to their difference in frequency, may be differentiated by the differential amplifier and fed to separate channels.
