Abstract

Catalyst for (co) polymerisation of olefins, contg. a transition metal cpd. (A) and an organo-metallic cpd. (B) in which (A) is made by reactor of (1) a reaction prod. of (a) a cpd. of formula R MgX, (in which R is 1-20C alkyl or aryl and X is halogen, with (b) a cpd. of formula AlRE'X3-n (in which R1 is 1-20 C alkyl or aryl, X is halogen and n is 0-3), and subsequently with (c) a cpd. of formula R"OH (in which R" is a 1-20C hydrocarbon gp), with (2) a Ti and/or V cpd. (Co)polymerisation of a-olefins, e.g. ethylene, propylen, and/or 1-butene, and copolymerisation of an olefin and a diene. Extremely active, allowing catalyst removal to be omitted and giving polymers of increased bulk density. Polymers of higher melt index can be made, or the hydrogen concn. to produce a given melt index reduced.
