Abstract
The method is for connecting cables or cables to equipment where the voltage may exceed 1KV. The method is intended to prevent the formation of voids between semiconducting and insulating layers when a discontinuity occurs as in a cable junction and the consequent ionization of a trapped gas and breakdown of the cable. The cable sheathing (4) when cut at such a junction forms a step, the void (8) appearing in a triangular cross-section annulus between the insulation and the heat-shrunk outer sleeving (5). The technique specifies the filling of this void with an oil based grease. The grease should be able to 'wet' the surfaces concerned and have a viscosity between 40 and 130 Po and have a resistivity of about 108 OHM/CM. The surface tension should be between 10 and 35 dynes/cm.
