Abstract

Molten metals, esp. Al or its alloys, are continuously cast in a mould to produce billets or strip. The molten metal flows through a nozzle fitted with a rotating stirrer, and part of the heat in the melt is extracted in the nozzle before the melt enters the mould. The stirrer can pref. be adjusted along the axis of the nozzle to control the flow of the melt through the nozzle, and the temp. of the melt is pref. adjusted so it is in a partly solidified state when it leaves the nozzle. The pref. plant includes a vessel or gutter with a refractory lining and an outlet nozzle with a tapered bore contg. a conical stirrer, and the nozzle is surrounded by a heat exchanger. The height of the stirrer can be adjusted to control the width of an annular gap in the nozzle through which the melt flows. Induction coils may be located round the nozzles to provide stirring. In conventional casting plant, heat is extracted in the mould to reduce the temp. of the melt to the liquidus and then to cause solidification, so the rate of casting is relatively slow. The invention extracts part of the heat in a nozzle before the melt enters the mould, so casting speeds can be increased by up to 100%; shrinkage, fissure formation and grain size are all reduced, so the properties of the casting are improved.
