Abstract

A rigid cover plate made from sheet metal or glass fibre reinforced plastic is fitted with a thermoplastic seal ring. The seal ring has also the function of providing a locating connection between the edge of the car body hole and the cover plate. The profile of the seal ring has a convex radial double taper connected to the cover plate carrying seal flange by a radial undercut. On installation, the cover plate is pressed into the car body hole so that the seal ring taper snaps over the edge of the hole and retains the cover assembly in position. By exposing the installed cover plate to a heat source, the thermoplastic locating ring is deformed so that a perfect seal is obtained.
