Abstract

Mono- or poly-alcohols not containing unsaturation at the alpha-carbon bearing the alcohol function are converted into ethers (oxides) and/or olefins by contacting the alcohol(s) with Gp VIII catalyst, (pref. Ru, Rh, Os) metal deriv., eg. organic or inorganic salt or chelates with, eg. beta-dicarbonyls. In particular benzyl alcohol gives benzyl oxide, cyclohexanol gives cyclohexene and cyclohexyl oxide, tert. BuOH gives isobutene, 2-Me-2-OH-butane gives 2-Me-butene-2, 3Me-1-OH-butane gives 3-Me-butyl oxide, butanol-benzyl alcohol mixture gives benzyl butyl oxide with benzyl oxide and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol gives the corr. oxide.
