Abstract
In a mould supported on a frame 6, Fig. 2, and formed of water-cooled plates 1-4 (held together by bolts 5), two opposed plates 3, 4 each comprise two wedge-shaped units 14, 15, so that relative up-and-down movement, e.g., by means of a screw-threaded spindle 17, Fig. 4, and nuts 21, 22, while the bolts 5 are temporarily loosened, widens these sides and broadens the mould cavity, which may have a curved axis. The spindle 17 is located in a bore 16 in one wall unit 14 of a narrow wall 3 or 4 and held from axial movement by a ring portion 18 at its middle, located in a recess (19) at the end of a projection from a backing support 13 for the wall units 14, 15. It has threads of opposed bands so that its rotation causes the nuts 21, 22 to move in opposite directions. Spigots 23, 24 from the nuts cause similar movement of the units 14, 15 since there are slotted holes 29 to receive bolts 25-28 by which the narrow wall 3 or 4 is held on the backing support 13. This support is in two parts 13a, 13b, Fig. 3, between which lie transverse bolts, 30, 31 bearing conical nuts 32, 33 which can spread the parts 13a, 13b to tighten the bolts 25-28. By means of screw-threaded spindles 11 (12) and worm gearing 8, 9, Fig. 3, of drives 7, the narrow walls 3, 4 are also movable towards and away from each other so as to widen or narrow the mould cavity and, since the lower spindles (12) have a smaller pitch, the angle between the narrow walls 3, 4 is changed to modify the cavity taper at the same time. The mould may be divided into two cavities by a wall (34), between the narrow walls 3, 4 and comprising backing parts (13a, 13b) with a pair of units (14, 15 at) each side.
