Abstract

Cellular polyurethanes having a density in excess of 10 pounds per cubic foot are prepared by reacting in a one-step process (a) a polyisocyanate component comprising methylene bis- (phenyl isocyanate), (b) a polyol component which is a polyester diol of equivalent weight from 75 to 1700 or a polyether polyol of equivalent weight from 300 to 1600 and an average functionality of 2 to 4, or a mixture thereof and (c) a blowing agent which is (i) up to 0À5% by weight based on the weight of component (6) of water and/or (ii) one or more aliphatic halogenated hydrocarbons having a b.p. not more than 110 C., the ratio of isocyanate groups to active hydrogen in the reaction components, including the water when used as a blowing agent, being in the range of 0À95:1À0 to 1À2:1À0. Suitably, the polyisocyanate component (c) comprises a mixture of polymethylene polyphenyl isocyanates containing from 35 to 85% by weight of methylene bis-(phenyl isocyanate) or comprises methylene bis-(phenyl isocyanate) which has previously been heated at 160 to 250 C. in the presence of 0À1 to 3% of a trialkylphosphate until the isocyanate equivalent is from 130 to 150. The reaction mixture may also contain a component (d) which is an aromatic primary diamine wherein each of the amino groups is attached directly to an aromatic nucleus, e.g. 3,31-dichlorobenzidine, and/or an aliphatic hydrocarbon diol containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Aliphatic halogenated hydrocarbons are suitably used as the blowing agent (ii). Conventional catalysts, surfactants and plasticizers may be added to the reaction mixture. The compositions may be poured into moulds to prepare shoe soles and heels, pouredin-place gaskets for the air filter case of an automobile engine or spring pads.
