Abstract
A coupling for two tubes 4, 41 comprises a casing 8 having a main bore 10 and disposed between the adjacent ends of the two tubes, two coaxial units 16, 161 slidably mounted in the main bore and each having a gasket 28, 281 for engagement with one of said tube ends, a deformable sealing member 30 connecting the two units, and means for urging the two units apart to engage the gaskets against the tube ends. The casing is slidably mounted for axial movement on a fixed stud 12, the casing bore 14 receiving the stud being flared at either end to permit slight swivelling movement. Each of the coaxial units consists of a nipple 26, 261 carrying a gasket and a flange member 20 slidable in the casing bore, said nipple and flanged member being connected by a multipart collar 24 which also serves to clamp the associated end of the bellows-type sealing member of polytetrafluoroethylene to the unit. The means for urging the two co-axial units apart comprises pairs of opposed pistons 34, 341 working in four subsidiary casing bores 32 supplied through a pneumatic or hydraulic circuit consisting of a shut-off and connecting nipple (38) and casing passages (36), Fig. 2 (not shown). Return springs 40 are connected to the flanged members. As shown, the ends of the two tubes are part-spherical. The arrangement accommodates small relative angular and longitudinal displacements of the tube ends.
