Description
CHILD SEAT
The present invention relates to a child seat, in particular a child safety seat for vehicles such as cars.
Child safety seats for restraining young children in cars are well known. There are four conventional stages for child safety seats. Firstly, stage 0 covers the age range from birth to around 6-12 months. The devices in this category typically comprise an infant carrier, in which the baby reclines, removable from the vehicle and carryable by means of an integral folding handle. They are usually installed in a "rear- facing" configuration, in which the child faces the rear of the vehicle, and are secured against a vehicle seat by the car's own three-point seatbelt. As the child grows, they move to Stage 1 (covering the 9kg to 18kg weight range). Typically, these seats include a forward- facing bucket -type seat secured to the vehicle using the 3 -point seatbelt. The seat itself includes a 5-point harness to restrain the child securely. Stage 2 seats cover the weight range from 15kg to 25 kg (typically ages 1 to 6 years). These seats typically including a booster-seat element, elevating the child from the surface of the vehicle seat, and an integral back-rest. The back-rest may include a 5-point harness, or may include means for routing the vehicle's 3-point seat belt across the child's chest. Finally, Stage 3 covers the weight range from 15kg to 36kg, and is typically used with older children (4 to 11 years). Stage 3 seats are essentially simple booster seats, elevating the child so that the vehicle's 3-point seatbelt fits appropriately across the child's shoulders and chest avoiding the neck. Some booster seats include a seatbelt guide to lower the height of the seatbelt where it passes over the child's shoulder.
Conventionally, a user has to purchase a separate seat for each stage of a child's growth. This obviously has significant cost implications. Seats have been developed which cover both Groups 2 and 3, wherein a Group 3 booster seat has a detachable back. More recently, combined Group 1,2 and 3 seats have been available, for example, the Britax TRIO or Javelin (trade marks).
The present invention seeks to provide a child's car seat having advantages over existing seats.
In a first aspect, the present invention provides a child seat base apparatus for a vehicle, the assembly comprising a base, for contact, in use, with a seat of the vehicle, and a seat surface; wherein the seat base apparatus comprises an adjustment mechanism whereby a height and an inclination of the seat surface with respect to the base is adjustable.
Preferably, the mechanism includes a lateral adjustment mechanism whereby the seat surface is laterally adjustable with respect to the base.
Suitably, the adjustment mechanism comprises a slide member comprising a pair of spaced slide elements in a base portion of the seat, each slide element having at least one elongate slot for receipt of a respective seat axle provided on an underside surface of a seat portion of the seat.
Preferably, each slide element comprises two elongate slots, defining front and rear slide element slots respectively. Preferably, each elongate slot is generally arcuate, defining a cam surface.
In a second aspect, the present invention provides a car seat comprising a seat base assembly as defined above and a seat back mounted thereon.
Preferably, the seat back is detachably mounted upon the seat base assembly.
Preferably, the seat back includes a seat belt guide adapted to receive the seat belt of the vehicle.
Preferably, the seat back and seat base assembly include a 5 -point harness assembly.
Preferably, the seat back includes a headrest assembly. Preferably, the head-rest is adjustable for height with respect to the seat back.
Preferably, the seat surface is laterally adjustable with respect to the seat back such that the seat surface is recessable in an aperture formed in the seat back.
The above and other aspects of the invention will now be described in further detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying figures in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic cross-section of a first embodiment of a car seat in accordance with the present invention in an elevated configuration;
Figure 2 is a schematic cross-section of the embodiment of Figure 1 in an intermediate configuration;
Figure 3 is a schematic cross-section of the embodiment of Figure lin a fully lowered on configuration;
Figure 4 is a front view of a second embodiment of a car seat in accordance with the present invention in a first configuration;
Figure 5 is a side view of the seat of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a front perspective view of the seat of Figure 4 in a second configuration;
Figure 7 is a side view of the seat of Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a perspective cut-away view of the adjustment mechanism of the embodiment of Figure 4;
Figure 9 is a schematic side sectional view of the mechanism of Figure 8 in an elevated configuration; and
Figure 10 is a schematic side sectional view of the mechanism of Figure 8 in a fully lowered position.
The present invention relates to a car seat suitable for children aged around 12 months to 10 years. The car seat has an adjustable seating surface which varies the combination of forward position, recline angle, and height, relative to the seat back, to allow for the ergonomic change between the age groups.
Referring initially to Figures 1 to 3, there is illustrated a child safety car seat having a seat base assembly, which comprises a base portion 9, upon which is located a seat portion 7. Combining with the seat base assembly is a seat back 8, which is removable so that the seat base assembly can function solely as a child's car booster seat.
The seat portion 7 is adjustable on the base portion 9 such that the geometry of the seat portion 7 relative to the seat back 8 can be varied. The seat portion 7 can be raised and lowered with the highest position being for the youngest child and the lowest portion being for the eldest child. The seat portion also inclines such that the rear area 15 can be lower than the front area 17. The seat portion 7 can also move backwards and forwards relative to the seat back 8. When the seat base assembly is in combination with the seat back 8, the positional variations provided by the seat base assembly enable the combined seating position to be set to the best position to suit the ergonomic and dynamic performance requirements. For example, for the smallest child the seat portion 7 may be in the highest position with the recline angle (4 in Figure 1) being minimal. Also the seating surface could be in the most rearward position closest to the seat back 8 where the surface area 15 is recessed within the seat back 8. This arrangement offers several benefits to a very young child including that
the length of seating surface is shorter for the child's legs and the child is elevated and in a posture suitable for optimum comfort and performance.
Alternatively, for an older child, the seat can be lowered, extended forward from the seat back 8 and the angle (6 in Figure 3) is the greatest. In so doing, the seating surface is longer for the longer legs of a larger child with optimal positioning for the adult 3 -point seat belt.
The geometric combination of adjustment to height and angle, and preferably backward and forward movements of the seat surface is a main element of the present invention.
Adjustment of the seat portion 7 is achieved by movement of element 10 which engages with axles 11 and 13 which are attached to seat portion 7. Element 10 includes a pair of cam slots 12 and 14. The slots differ from one another such that when the element 10 is moved the axles 11 and 13 displace unequally so as to effect a different degree of movement both vertically and horizontally at the front 17 as to that at the back 15, thereby inclining the seat surface.
Figures 4 and 5 show an alternative embodiment of a seat 20 in Group 2/3 mode in which the vehicle's 3 -point seat belt 21 is used to restrain both the child and the seat. The seatbelt passes over a shoulder portion of back 8 of the seat 20. Lap portion 22 of seatbelt 21 passes under hooks 23 formed in either side of portion 9 in conventional manner. The shoulder portion of back 8, in combination with the height adjustment of base portion 9 serves to ensure that seatbelt 21 is properly directed over the child's chest rather than passing over their neck.
Figures 6 and 7 show the same embodiment in Group 1 mode including a 5 -point harness 30. Construction and operation of the harness 30 is generally conventional. Seat 20 is restrained by means of seatbelt 21 passing through apertures 31 provided in a rear surface of the seat back 8.
Figures 8 to 10 show in more detail the operation of this embodiment. The features of the mechanism are generally as described above and have been given the same reference numerals. In this embodiment, there is no rearward or lateral adjustment of the seat.
The following statements set out certain preferred features and characteristics of the present invention.
1. The combination geometry of a seat portion 7 can be varied in height, angle and forward or backward position relative to seat back 8 and base portion 9.
2. Seat portion 7 varies in distance from the top of the seat back 8 where the shoulder belt passes over the child's shoulder.
3. This is preferably achieved by a synchronised mechanism.
