- the ignition voltage must overcome the resistance in the discharge lamp and is proportional to the prevailing gas pressure. It can be up to 50 kv, but only needs to be present for a short time as a high-voltage pulse. After the discharge lamp has been ignited, the resistance inside the discharge lamp decreases and the previously very low lamp current can rise to impermissibly high values due to the negative resistance characteristic of the ionized gas. A ballast with a positive current-voltage characteristic is therefore required to limit the current. Ballasts can be designed as choke ballasts or as electronic ballasts, with choke ballasts a robust construction, high operational reliability and easy handling can be achieved. However, they require a relatively large amount of installation space, cannot compensate for the lamp tolerances and changes in the mains voltage, and are relatively difficult.
