Abstract

PCT No. PCT/EP94/00565 Sec. 371 Date Jan. 4, 1996 Sec. 102(e) Date Jan. 4, 1996 PCT Filed Feb. 26, 1994 PCT Pub. No. WO95/02225 PCT Pub. Date Jan. 19, 1995A method of codifying and comparing an identification card includes imprinting the identification card with a selected fingerprint of the owner which upon match with a corresponding natural fingerprint of the owner opens the access to a terminal that stores another fingerprint of the owner. If a comparison of this stored fingerprint matches also the corresponding natural fingerprint of the owner, the identification card is cleared for use.

Description

The invention relates to identification cards, such as those used in a variety of forms and configurations at banks, in trade and in industry. Examples of such cards are: identity cards, check cards, credit cards, authorization cards for locking systems, safes etc., other security papers, savings books, certificates.

Various security measures have already been proposed to prevent unauthorized use of such cards, e.g. Secret numbers and photos. The former can easily be determined by observations. Photographs are outdated and are not counterfeit-proof.

It has also been proposed to use one of his fingerprints to identify the cardholder. According to DE 42 18 821 A1, a fingerprint of the cardholder is printed on the credit card. In use, the cardholder's natural fingerprint is compared to the print on the card. Even fingerprints are not counterfeit-proof and can be copied and copied together with the credit card.

According to DE 3335 678 A1, an identification card is described on which a person's fingerprint is stored in coded form. This saved Fingerprint is encoded with a characteristic coding key derived from this fingerprint according to a predetermined rule. Only when there is a match between the natural fingerprint and the fingerprint encoded on the identification card does a release signal occur.

The effort for coding and decrypting and comparing the coding is not insignificant.

An identification code is derived from the measured fingerprint. A comparison of the print stored on the identification card with the authentic print proves the authorization of the card user.

In Fig. 1 of EP 0 379 333 A1 the support surface for the finger to be imaged is in the form of the fingertip, i.e. rounded.

The storage of fingerprints in holograms is evident from DE - A - 33 35 678.

The generation of a signal tone when an identification card is used to walk through a passage results from WO - A - 89/12287. The object of the invention is an identification card which enables coding and checking in a simple manner and which cannot be used by a third party in the event of theft or loss.

According to the invention, a method for encoding identification cards by means of fingerprints is proposed, in which the cardholder takes a plurality of fingerprints from a fingerprint sensor. From the fingerprints taken, an imprint is applied as a key code to the identification card, and after a scrambling key, at least one of the other fingerprints is selected and stored as an identification code.

According to an embodiment of the invention, all fingers of both hands, including the thumbs for creating the key code and the identification code, are removed by a fingerprint sensor. This has the advantage for many people who use the card little and in particular also for older people that they do not need to remember which fingers made the prints during the coding.

The cardholder does not need to know the fingerprint selected as the key code. He's going for one Above all, laypeople cannot be realized if only a certain part of the fingerprint is used as coding. Knowing the finger from which the key code originates is of little value even for an unauthorized person, since it is only the key code that does not yet allow the identification card to be used.

The large number of impressions offers greater security for scrambling. Scrambling keys and methods are known.

According to a further embodiment of the invention, the key coding is carried out only by pressing certain fingers. If you combine this form of coding with a measure known per se, which makes the card unusable if the key coding does not match the natural fingerprint, a further security level is installed.

The identification code can consist of a single fingerprint or of several. Multiple fingerprints increase security. Given the diversity of fingerprints, a single print is also sufficient.

According to a further proposal of the invention, the method for identifying an identification card encoded according to one of claims 1 to 4 is that the cardholder takes a plurality of fingerprints by means of a fingerprint sensor, that the fingerprints taken are compared with the key code - fingerprint on the identification card a memory is opened and if a natural fingerprint matches the key code - fingerprint of the identification card is that the fingerprint selected and stored according to a scrambling key is compared with the taken natural fingerprints and that if one of the taken natural fingerprints matches the stored fingerprint, a release signal is given.

Profis richten mit einer Karte Schäden bis zu 100.000.-- Mark an.This identification process is simple to carry out and requires only a relatively small amount of equipment at the location of the identification card. If one considers that the annual volume of credit card fraud alone amounts to 100 million marks in Germany, the advantage of the double-secured fingerprint identification card according to the invention is remarkable. Professionals use a card to damage up to 100,000 marks.

In the identification method according to the invention, the cardholder pushes his identification card into a fingerprint acceptance and comparison device and places a plurality or all of the fingers of both hands on the fingerprint sensor. According to a further proposal of the invention, the sensor surface is arcuate, so that all fingers including the thumb come into contact well.

If the comparison of the fingerprint on the card with one of the natural fingerprints shows a match, an access to a memory is opened by means of a signal, which contains the fingerprint of the cardholder selected according to a scrambling system. This memory can be a local terminal at the location where the card is used. A central terminal that is connected online to the fingerprint acceptance and comparison device at the place of use is more advantageous.

When the memory is entered, the stored fingerprint is compared with the transmitted fingerprints and, if the stored fingerprint matches one of the transmitted fingerprints, the identification card is released.

This creates an identification card that cannot be used without the cardholder. The double coding rules out any misuse.

According to a further proposal of the invention, an identification card can be provided with at least one further key code fingerprint. A corresponding identification code fingerprint is then assigned to this in the memory. Such cards are useful if several people use the card for the same purpose at different times. The number of cards issued is thereby kept low. Such an identification card can also be used instead of an easily forged proxy for e.g. Withdrawals can be used.

An advantageous embodiment of the invention consists in storing the key code fingerprint in a hologram on the identification card.

In addition to the applications mentioned on page 1, paragraph 1, the methods according to the invention described can also be used according to the invention to identify holders of paintings, porcelain, valuable prints and other objects of art. Instead of the identification card, a key code fingerprint is applied to the painting, etc., which can only be removed by removing it. The key code imprint on the painting is compared in the same way with a specific one natural fingerprint of the holder. For double security, a specific natural fingerprint of the holder is then compared with a specific scrambled fingerprint of the holder and stored in a terminal.

Standard devices can be used as a fingerprint sensor. As already mentioned, the methods according to the invention can be carried out particularly well if the sensor surface is curved. This means that all fingers, including the thumbs, rest easily and completely.

According to the invention, a particularly advantageous arcuate configuration consists in a rotatable drum, in particular with a diameter that is sufficient but also large enough for the placement. Another advantageous embodiment is a ribbon-shaped transparent film.

According to a further proposal of the invention, the sensor surface is passed through a cleaning bath after the fingerprints have been removed. This is particularly useful for the immediate removal of the prints from the sensor surface so that they cannot be removed.

In order to increase the security of the identification cards according to the invention, the fingerprint acceptance and comparison device is arranged in a room, the input of which can be locked immediately by a signal as soon as the key code and / or identification code fingerprints of the user do not match those of the legitimate cardholder . The additional arrangement of a camera and alarm device supports this measure.

A drawing of an identification card according to the invention is shown in the drawing. The key code fingerprint is applied at point A.
