Se describe un proceso para la separación criogénica de una corriente de alimentación que contiene metano y gases de aire en la que: - la corriente de alimentación se enfría a fin de producir una corriente enfriada, - al menos una porción de la corriente enfriada se envía a un nivel de una columna de destilación, - una corriente de fondo se retira de la columna de destilación, la corriente de fondo estando enriquecida en metano con relación a la corriente de alimentación, - una corriente enriquecida en oxígeno y en nitrógeno con relación a la corriente de alimentación se retira de la columna de destilación, - al menos una corriente de dilución no combustible que es más volátil que el oxígeno, se introduce en la columna de destilación en al menos un nivel inferior a la que se introduce la corriente enfriada, caracterizado en que la corriente de dilución se extrae de la corriente de alimentación. Instalación para producir biometano por purificación de biogases derivados de instalaciones de almacenamiento de residuos no peligrosos (NHWSF) que implementan el proceso.
