Abstract
An atomic frequency standard consists of a high-quality quartz oscillator phase locked to an atomic transition of particular insensitivity to the external perturbations with a very high Q and a good SNR in the detection system. These requirements greatly restrict the number of atomic or molecular transitions suitable as a reference for an atomic frequency standard.
