Abstract
Although the nonlinear susceptibility of typical single-mode fiber material is very small, the reduced core size and the low loss lead to high intensities and long interaction lengths. Consequently, nonlinear Interactions in the fiber material set an upper limit to the power levels that can be transmitted through single-mode fibers, thereby affecting the operation of optical transmission systems.
